Coal as a Precursor for High Value-Added Products

Edgar Lara-Curzio, Ph.D., Fellow ASTM, Fellow ACerS

Distinguished Research Staff Member
Leader, Mechanical Properties & Mechanics Group
Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Thursday, September 14, 2017 ~ 2-3 pm Eastern

Have you noticed Secretary of Energy Rick Perry’s enthusiasm for the work of our national labs? He’s been touring various facilities around the country learning about pioneering projects, research programs, energy innovation, and more. One such visit was to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

An area of research ORNL is involved in is the refining of coal into precursors for high value-added products such as carbon fibers, electrodes for energy storage devices (lithium-ion batteries), graphene, and rare earth elements (critical materials). ORNL has a vision for finding a use for EVERY molecule in coal extracted from a mine, including rare earth elements and water. That vision extends to job creation and economic development, as the science to be developed would facilitate the siting and development of manufacturing facilities in coal communities providing new opportunities and re-training programs to staff these new manufacturing facilities.

Join us as Dr. Lara-Curzio of ORNL provides an overview of the nation’s national labs, and discusses this important and promising coal research area including the science, partnerships, and developing projects for coal as a precursor to high value-added products.

The American Coal Council’s Coal Q&A Program provides a forum to address critical issues affecting the U.S. coal industry ~ including coal producers, consumers and transporters.  Each program begins with a topic briefing by a leading industry analyst or representative, followed by a Q&A session.
