Preparing Future Coal Industry Leaders Today

 

The ACC’s Tomorrow’s Leadership Council (TLC) is designed to advance and vest executive talent in the coal industry.  The Council provides a meaningful opportunity for up-and-coming executives to enhance their industry knowledge and networks through projects and activities that advance industry-wide objectives as well as professional development goals.

The TLC program, which launched in 2009, has had participation from 140 executives with the following companies throughout the coal supply chain:

What Activities/Events Are Planned for TLC Participants?

TLC participants receive complimentary registrations to each of the two annual strategic industry issues conferences hosted by the American Coal Council (an $850 value/conference) ~ the Spring Coal Forum (March 6-8, 2018/Clearwater, FL) and Coal Market Strategies Conference (August 6-8, 2018/Santa Fe-Albuquerque, NM). These events are attended by senior level executives from the coal supply, consumption, transportation, trading, consulting, and supply services industries. Each ACC event provides the latest information on critical issues impacting each of these industry sectors. 

At the Spring Coal Forum and Coal Market Strategies conferences, TLC participants attend a special 1/2-day professional development seminar - conducted by an expert presenter (a $500 value/conference). Each seminar is designed to advance professional skills in the areas of project management, communications, research, and/or presentation skills. 

special dinner for TLC participants is hosted on the opening evening of the Spring Coal Forum and Coal Market Strategies conferences for TLC participants. This dinner provides TLC members with an opportunity to network with industry peers and senior level industry and government executives who are invited to share their expertise and perspectives on the future of the industry with TLC attendees (a $150 value/dinner).

Who Should Participate in the TLC, and What is the Cost?

Entry-level staff and mid-level executives from the coal supply, consumption, transportation, and trading industries, as well as those working in companies that support these business sectors. We have had a wide range of program participants, from those early in their careers to those who became involved with coal later in their career path.

The TLC program is open to all coal-related companies and organizations, with a discount for ACC member company participants. The program cost is $1,750 for ACC members and $2,250 for non-members.

ACC reserves the right to limit the number of annual program participants in order to offer the best possible TLC experience.

 

What Other Engagement is Planned for TLC Participants?

The virtual TLC community meets electronically and via conference call between conferences to work on industry-wide projects decided on by TLC participants themselves, in coordination with ACC staff.

·         2010 ~ Coal Unplugged: A review of the many ways we use carbon-based products for purposes other than power generation.

·         2011 ~ Making Social Media Work for the Coal Industry: Using social media to advance coal-focused business communication, advocacy and community building objectives.

·         2012 ~ Coal Industry Advocacy: What is being done to enhance coal’s image?: Understanding the benefits of electrification – Addressing anti-coal myths – How to share factual, balanced information on coal

·         2013 ~ Coal 2040: The Future of Coal: A forward-looking perspective on the benefits and use of coal 20-25 years from now.

·         2014 ~ Changing the Narrative and Moving Beyond Our Challenges: Coal as a means of development and human betterment – How we address environmental issues associated with using coal – The economic value of coal – Regulatory and environmental action against coal.

·         2015 ~ Coal Communications Kit: Development of a hands-on tool for anyone related to the coal sector to use in conveying key messages about the value and benefits of coal to build bridges and counter misinformation, in either personal or professional settings.

·         2016 ~ Creating Coal Advocates: With an increasing need for coal stakeholders to be active proponents of the industry, participants prepare for and engage in ‘everyday advocacy’ at the local level through various means including presentations to community groups, schools or universities, writing letters to the editor, and other means to expand coal sector outreach.

·         2017 ~ Enhancing Coal’s Social Media Effectiveness: Social media is a go-to source for news and information for much of the general public. Our President embraces it, bypassing traditional media to engage directly with Americans. The use of social media by the coal sector is compared and contrasted with other groups to assess ways to make the best, most effective use of this medium to build on and enhance our industry messages.

How is the TLC Structured?

The TLC is organized as an annual, calendar-year program beginning in January and concluding in December.  This one-year commitment is recommended to best benefit from the program offerings and opportunities.

What is Unique About the TLC?

The TLC is specific to the coal industry ~ the community of participants and their activities focus exclusively on coal.  The program is intended to compliment other corporate leadership development programs that are designed to advance more general business skills.
